Sawtooth star is my favorite quilt block. I’m instantly drawn to any quilt that uses it as its starting point. I was playing around in EQ8 and decided it was time to make a quilt that started from a sawtooth star block. I wanted a quilt with variety in its piecing. I get bored easily and wanted to make a few different components that all came together in the end. For this quilt, half rectangle triangles meet quarter circles and flying geese to create a geometric flower. I used this quilt as a way to practice free motion quilting on my domestic machine. I did a feather-ish pattern inside each flower petal, with a large flower in the negative space at the center. The background needed simplicity with texture so I did a large meander. I love the modern boldness of this quilt - and I also love that it’s not shying too far away from its traditional roots either. Florahedron. Flora for flowers. Hedron for its geometric sharpness.
