Quilt Story – I love both modern and vintage styles. I was inspired by a vintage quilt (owned by Alissa Wertz.) It was a simple green & cream pinwheel design, yet a complexity in the hexagon pieces. After some research, I found the quilt originated in the 1930s, and one source named it “Kaleidoscope Hexagon. Using my custom, texture series fabric, I aimed to create a modern look. Starting with enhanced macro photography of fiberglass from a deserted catamaran, I printed the photo on fabric. The color changes in the fabric design undulate throughout the pinwheels. The connecting hexi’s are each made from 12 pinwheels, which technically is called a “dodecagon.” I was motivated to create this second version in response to a hexagon challenge presented at “The 2026 Great Wisconsin Quilt Show.” This is the second version of this design created from my custom fabric…hence the name, …Dodecagon II.
