Journal Notes

One of the gentlemen I have met through Scouting went on the Badger Honor Flight in May of 2023. I contacted his daughter and then spoke to the Quilt of Valor folks to understand the process. In May of 2024 I spoke with Ron and asked if he would be willing to accept a QOV if I made one for him. He was speechless for a moment and then told me that it was something he would never request or apply for but if I chose to make one he would be honored to accept it. There were a few tears from both of us. Ron is from a family of military members. The quilt has the embroidered names of his grandfather, his father, Ron and a young man named James who was killed in action in Vietnam. Ron accompanied James' body back to his mother in Mayfield, Wisconsin. The Spielman family continues to make the trip to the cemetery where James now rests. Presented to Ron on May 2, 2026 at Canyon Camp during a Kiwanis work weekend.
