Two years ago, I was sitting in a professional development class for my day job (mechanical estimator) and the afternoon topic went VERY deep into mechanical engineering. So deep that I was having trouble following…so I started doodling. The instructor had on thick glasses so I made a pair on my paper. Then I started sketching quilt blocks around the glasses. Then I asked “what if part of this was blurry”? Most of my quilts tend to start with “what if”… It’s taken me a couple years to get this from idea to final quilt, but I’m pretty happy with the result! I used traditional piecing for the blue/grey curved blocks. I used foundation paper piecing for the snails trail blocks inside the glasses. Then I added a chromatic aberration effect using Inktense pencils around the snails trail blocks. Finally, I needle-turn appliquéd the glasses on top (and used two layers of organza to lightly diffuse/blur the snails trail blocks further). I quilted it on my domestic machine, added the facing, and voila!
